County Championship 2026 Preview šŸ†

The covers are coming off, the heavy rollers are out, and the tea urns are bubbling. Tomorrow, Friday, April 3rd, the 2026 Rothesay County Championship officially begins. After a bruising 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia, the domestic red-ball circuit returns as the ultimate proving ground for those looking to mend England's fortunes.

Here is your Cow Corner guide to the summer ahead.

5 Players to Look Out For

Ā * James Rew (Somerset): At 22, Rew is the jewel of the West Country. Having spent the winter as an unused reserve for the Test side, he’ll be hungry to prove he’s the rightful heir to the gloves.

Ā * Farhan Ahmed (Nottinghamshire): Following a stellar 2025, the younger Ahmed brother is no longer a secret. On a Trent Bridge surface that usually offers something for the spinners late on, his development is paramount.

Ā * Zaman Akhter (Essex): A massive winter move from Gloucestershire. Essex have been hunting for a high-pace enforcer to compliment the relentless accuracy of Jamie Porter; Akhter is exactly that.

Ā * James Coles (Sussex): The young batting all-rounder is increasingly becoming a "man for all seasons." With Sussex starting on -12 points due to a deduction, they need Coles to replicate his 1,000-run form from last year.

Ā * Shoaib Bashir (Derbyshire): The headline move of the off-season. After struggling for consistent rhythm at Somerset, Bashir’s loan-turned-permanent move to Derby gives him the "number one" status he needs to secure his England spot.

The "Point to Prove" List

Ā * Ollie Pope (Surrey): Lost his Test spot to Jacob Bethell during the Ashes. Pope is the king of the Oval, but he needs big, daddy hundreds to force the selectors' hands.

Ā * Zak Crawley (Kent): Despite a decent Ashes (273 runs), Kent's relegation to Division Two means Crawley must dominate "lesser" attacks to remain the first name on Rob Key's team sheet.

Ā * Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire): Opted out of the IPL to focus on red-ball consistency. After being targeted by Mitchell Starc all winter, his battle against the new ball tomorrow will be telling.

Ā * Oliver Hannon-Dalby (Worcestershire): A shock late-window move from Warwickshire to the Pears (on a short-term basis initially). At 36, he wants to prove he’s still the most dangerous new-ball operator in the country.

Dark Horses for England Selection

Ā * Jordan Cox (Essex): The ultimate "Bazball" fit. He can keep, he can field anywhere, and he strikes it at 80+. If a middle-order slot opens up, Cox is the frontrunner.

Ā * Kasey Aldridge (Durham): The move from Somerset to the North East is a masterstroke. Durham’s bouncy tracks suit his height and "heavy ball" style perfectly.

Ā * Sonny Baker (Hampshire): If he stays fit, he is the fastest bowler in the country not currently in an England shirt. Simple as that.

Cow Corner Predictions

Division One

Ā * Winners: Surrey. Even without their England stars, the depth of talent at the Kia Oval is frankly unfair.

Ā * Runners-Up: Somerset. This is the year they come agonizingly close again.

Ā * Relegated: Sussex (due to the -12 point handicap) and Leicestershire.

Division Two

Ā * Promoted: Yorkshire (Champions) and Middlesex.

Ā * The Wooden Spoon: Derbyshire.
